A newly discovered species of non-reefbuilding, solitary coral was named Notophyllia hecki in recognition of Philipp R. Heck, who collected and made available for study a large collection of deep-water corals from the Marion Plateau.

Notophyllia hecki is known only from Marion Plateau, North-East Australian Margin where we discovered it at a depth of 342 - 414 m during a marine geological cruise with the Australian research vessel RV Franklin in 1999. All seven species of Notophyllia are endemic to South- and East-Australian waters.
